Body talk. I know. This topic is a tough one to discuss. It’s a topic full of defense mechanisms and guard. It’s tough to navigate. Or rather, it’s difficult in a tight rope sort of sense. One misstep, too much or too little transfer of weight, and you’re falling. Some of us only fall a little, yet there are others who wonder if they’ll ever hit the ground. It’s a topic that shouldn’t be this way though. Because, well, it’s the one thing truly carrying us through this life. This is why it’s time we have to start listening. All of us experience stress. From seniors to adults and teens to children, we’ve all felt that whirlwind of emotions. Stress is technically the reaction to a situation where a person feels threatened or anxious. It can be a positive kind of stress, like the kind of planning any big event. Or it can be the negative kind, such as dealing with a natural disaster. Stress can be beneficial when it helps a person develop necessary skills to deal with any situation life throws at you. For the last two weeks, we’ve been discussing the postpartum disorders that arise once your baby is born. As much as we’d like to say that these issues don’t happen, these cases are becoming more and more prominent. Fortunately, women are becoming braver and braver in sharing their stories and reaching out for help. Two weeks ago we discussed the most common of those postpartum disorders, postpartum depression. Last week, we shifted gears into learning more about postpartum anxiety. This week, we want to take a deep dive into some of the other postpartum symptoms – those of which relate to postpartum PTSD, postpartum OCD, and postpartum psychosis.

A few weeks ago, we posted a blog on CBT, a type of treatment that promotes changing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to manage and reduce anxiety. Today, we want to take a deeper dive into a branch of CBT called Dialectical Behavior Therapy. DBT skills are important, as they tend to fill in the gaps that CBT may leave behind. Rather than only treating symptoms as problems to be solved, DBT places an equally important emphasis on acceptance of experiences as they are in this moment.
