Hi! I’m Mary Brodland and one of my passions is working with people in transition. When I work with people on life transitions, one constant is that everyone’s transition is unique. Below I broke life transitions into a few broad categories- See which one your life transition may fit into!
Job related changes
Job changes can come from being promoted, being transferred, taking a new job, losing an old job, even identifying a new way of looking at a job you’ve had for years. It can come when we need to or want to retire, or when we experience a shift in the power we have in our position. We may also experience job changes in the form of job related prejudice, or feeling pressure from changes, even new technology or knowledge within our industry.
Life related changes
Life changes can occur when our children move out, when our children move back, when we move in with our children, when we have a new child, when we get married, when we get divorced, or when we lose a loved one (friend, family, pet, etc). They can also be when we assume a caregiver role for a loved one who is sick, a grandchild or friend, or when we ourselves need care from someone else.
Expected or Unexpected Changes
Changes can be expected, like when we approach retirement or go from being pregnant to holding our child for the first time, or can come out of the blue, like when we are in a car accident or we have a sudden change of health, including the remission of a disease.
My approach with people experiencing life transitions is to choose a combination of techniques, best suited for that individual, with the goal to help them navigate their transitions. These techniques include – but are not limited to:
- Motivational Interviewing
- Mindfulness Training
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- other problem solving methods as needed
When we work together we:
- Process the situation that you are in
- Identify strengths and resources that can be used
- What is possible given the new transition
- Identifying coping skills to deal with accepting the changes that are needed
